In the heart of Ouagadougou, amidst the bustling streets and vibrant markets, lies the extraordinary world of Sahab Koanda, affectionately known as “The Prince of Trash.” He gave us one of the most extraordinary experiences during the project "Je suis la rue", which we carried out together with a group of children from the street.
Koanda, a visionary artist from Burkina Faso, has earned this moniker through his remarkable ability to transform discarded materials into stunning works of art.
With the street children of Ouagadougou, we had the privilege of immersing ourselves in Koanda’s creative process, surrounded by his fantastic creations primarily made from iron salvaged from the garbage.
Sahab Koanda’s journey as an artist is as unique as his art. Growing up in Burkina Faso, he developed a keen eye for the potential in discarded objects.
Where others saw waste, Koanda saw raw materials for artistic expression. His passion for repurposing trash into art is driven by a profound respect for the environment and a desire to challenge perceptions about waste.
Koanda’s work is characterized by his innovative use of recycled materials, especially iron. His studio is a treasure trove of discarded objects, from rusty metal scraps to old machine parts, all waiting to be transformed by his creative genius.
With meticulous craftsmanship, he shapes these materials into intricate sculptures, each telling a story of resilience and ingenuity.
One of the most striking aspects of Koanda’s art is his ability to infuse lifeless materials with vitality and meaning. His sculptures often depict human figures, animals, and abstract forms, reflecting themes of nature, society, and identity.
Through his work, Koanda not only highlights the beauty in the discarded but also prompts viewers to reconsider their relationship with waste and consumption / read more...

Koanda’s interaction with the street children extended beyond mere artistic instruction. He shared stories of his own journey, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and the power of imagination. This mentorship was invaluable, providing the children with not only practical skills but also inspiration and hope for their futures.
Sahab Koanda’s influence extends beyond the boundaries of his studio. His art has garnered international acclaim, featuring in exhibitions and art fairs around the world.
