Karina Alvarez is a multimedia artist whose work bridges the realms of video, sound, and drawing to create immersive, generative environments. With a PhD in Art from the University of Guanajuato and a Master of Fine Arts from the École Supérieure d'Art de Grenoble, her work has been featured in exhibitions across France, Mexico, Brazil, Spain, Japan, and the United States.
Alvarez’s artistic practice explores the intersection of technology and human experience. Using innovative tools such as software, microcontrollers, and integrated sensors, she constructs dynamic installations that invite viewers to question the spaces they inhabit, both physically and conceptually.
Her installations often utilize programming languages to synthesize sound and visuals, creating layered, algorithmic compositions that respond to geographic, ideological, and emotional contexts / read more...
Through her research, Karina Alvarez investigates how spaces influence perception and interaction. Her work often plays with the idea of fractured narratives and multiple screens, immersing audiences in environments where images and sounds are intentionally disjointed, evoking a sense of discontinuity.
By incorporating low-resolution technology and blending analog techniques with cutting-edge digital processes, Karina Alvarez introduces the concept of "low definition" as a means to explore the contrast between past and present, simplicity and complexity.
Her current projects focus on pushing the boundaries of these technologies, synthesizing audio-visual elements to create thought-provoking, sensory experiences that challenge the way we see and feel our surroundings.
