This 13-day workshop is a window into the everyday life of a Surma village in Ethiopia’s Omo Valley — a rare opportunity to a rare opportunity to live, learn, and create in collaboration with one of the Omo Valley’s most culturally rich and historically significant communities. Guided by Ayzoh! photographers, you’ll document stories that matter — with purpose, care, and respect.

This workshop supports the project Somos
“Somos” is Ayzoh!’s global multimedia initiative that connects indigenous communities across four continents with a worldwide network of supporters. This ongoing project bridges cultures through powerful storytelling, documentary photography, and immersive experiences — fostering solidarity, mutual understanding, and shared dignity across borders.
Our work with the Surma began in 2013 and has evolved into a deep relationship rooted in trust, care, and shared authorship. Participants will be invited into this ongoing dialogue — not to observe, but to collaborate in telling stories that matter, from the inside out.
Who are the Surma People?
The Surma — also known as the Suri — inhabit the remote highlands of Ethiopia near the border with South Sudan. Renowned for their fierce independence and striking aesthetic traditions, the Surma practice lip-plate adornment, intricate scarification, and elaborate body painting as deep forms of self-expression and cultural pride.
Living far from paved roads and outside the rhythms of the dominant global culture, their way of life is shaped by both beauty and tension. This workshop offers a rare opportunity to encounter a community that challenges visual conventions and invites a more profound, patient gaze.
Why Participate?
These are not simulations or staged encounters. They are immersive, hands-on workshops developed in direct collaboration with the communities we’ve been working with for years. Whether you’re a photographer, writer, researcher, or simply a curious human being — this is your chance to participate in something real.
Our workshops are based on respect, presence, and deep listening. You’ll witness powerful stories unfold, and contribute to meaningful documentation that may inform future publications, exhibitions, or community archives.
